Patio Magazine invites you to join a collective exploration of Identities, a theme that seeks to uncover the layers, contradictions, and aspirations shaping Latin American practices today. In this issue, we offer a platform for contributors to define their own narratives and provoke meaningful conversations through their work.
Latin America is a region of immense diversity—geographically, culturally, and historically. Yet, we are often reduced to oversimplified definitions. We know better: the arid Atacama Desert differs profoundly from the lush Amazon; the Andean peaks evoke something distinct from the Caribbean shores. Our cuisine, traditions, and histories vary, yet they also connect us in complex and powerful ways.
This is your opportunity to engage with these nuances and reflect on what “identity” means in your unique context. Whether through essays, drawings, photography, poetry, or experimental formats, we welcome contributions that challenge stereotypes, reimagine histories, and illuminate the richness of contemporary Latin American perspectives.
What makes us who we are? How do we see ourselves—and how are we seen by others? Let’s push boundaries and expand the dialogue about what it means to live, create, and belong in the multifaceted reality of being Latin American today.
Submissions are open to all formats and ideas (see description to each format below). Join the conversation.
Issue 3
Patio welcomes submissions for publication on our digital platform, on the print version of Issue 3: Identities — scheduled for summer 2025 — and on the Patio Instagram page.
Patio welcomes submissions from all creators, with a focus on Latin American creators and/or creators working on Latin American subjects. Patio believes that its richness is based on the broad range of elements that are found within the region. These projects may explore multiple disciplines, including art, architecture, urban design, planning, policy, preservation and development.
In the spirit of a patio conversation, Patio welcomes short essays (no more than 1,500 words) that address the topic of “Identities” (see description above) in the Latin American context. Patio is currently accepting English-language submissions.
We welcome the following types of submissions:
Essays: Write between 500 and 1000 words on what it means to be Latinx in the built environment or how working in Latin America shapes your understanding of identity.
Photo Essays: Submit 5 to 10 images with captions that explore how identity is reflected in your work, community, or environment, among other fields.
Poetry: Share a poem that connects identity and place.
Project Documentation: Present a project you have worked on using 5 to 10 images, drawings, or plans, in a visual essay setting, with captions explaining how identity played a role in the work.
Artworks: Submit a drawing, collage, or other visual work that expresses your identity or that of a specific place in Latin America.
We are looking for clear and honest reflections on identity. Share what makes us different, what connects us, and how these ideas shape the spaces we create.
